Perez Hits 1,000 But Albright Misses Chance to Clinch Playoff Berth

More news about: Albright

Pedro Perez scored his 1,000th career point and had a big day overall, but the Albright College men's basketball team lost a chance to clinch a playoff spot in a 68-65 home loss to Lycoming.

Perez finished with 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. He scored his milestone basket with 11:26 left in the first half on a nice up-and-under on the break.

Albright had a 1,000 point scorer for the second straight game, after senior Kyle Jordan completed the feat at Stevenson on Saturday. Jordan finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and four steals.

Perez found Calvert Gantz with a nice pass to make it 4-0 Albright early, and assisted Jordan for an 8-4 lead. Jordan's and-one had the Lions ahead 11-8 after seven minutes played.

Josh Marquez stole a pass and hit Perez on the break for a 17-10 Albright lead. Lycoming scored seven straight, but Perez' pull-up with the shot clock winding down had the Lions back on top 24-21.

Malcolm Covington threw an alley-oop to Kevin Anthony early in the second half as the visitors surged to a 40-33 lead. Sam Marrella's three-pointer helps get the Lions right back in it.

Justin Miller's tip-in made it 56-51 Lycoming with 6:14 to play. Devin Brown completed a nice drive up the middle, and a three from Perez pulled Albright to within one, 57-56. The next time down the floor, Perez drove to the basket to give the Lions the lead.

Jordan, sitting with four fouls, came back into the game and immediately went coast-to-coast for a 60-59 Albright lead. Patrick Dougher's three-pointer with 53 seconds put the Warriors up 64-62 and in front for good however.

Albright and Lycoming are now tied for the fifth and final playoff spot at 8-9, with Albright hosting Elizabethtown and Lycoming hosting Hood on Saturday.

Lycoming currently holds the tiebreaker with Messiah sitting in first place, so Albright needs to win and either have Hood beat Lycoming, or have rival Alvernia knock off the first place Falcons. That would put Alvernia or Stevenson in first place, and swing the tiebreaker back Albright's way. There are also scenarios that could get the Lions in if both they and the Warriors lose Saturday.

The Lions (12-12 overall) will celebrate Senior Day and recognize their departing class of Perez, Jordan, Marrella and Reuel Moore.
