More news about: Oglethorpe

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team used an 18-6 run over a 6:28 span in the middle of the second half to seize control of tonight's contest against Hendrix en route to an 80-66 SAA win at Dorough Field House.

Led by nine points from freshman forward Will Perry and three blocks from sophomore forward Victor Rohlfs, the Petrels held a 62-46 advantage when the dust settled with 8:16 to go. During the run, junior guard Alex Davis posted three points and an assist, while senior guard Tyler Courson had four points and an assist.

Davis had a game-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor to go with three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Courson had a stellar Senior Night with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting (one three-pointer), five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Davis and Courson made their mark during scoring bursts in each half that provided the hosts with the cushion they needed.

Breaking a 14-14 tie at 10:21 of the first half, Oglethorpe started an 11-2 run about a minute later to create some separation. But the visitin Warriors fought back into the mix, pulling to within four, 29-25, with 4:54 before the intermission. The Petrels' run was fueled by Courson, who posted nine of his points during the stretch, including a pull-up three-pointer on a fast-break and a spectacular change-of-speed reverse layup that started with a block by Rohlfs, who had six blocks total.

Davis led the Petrels into the break with six points surrounding a Perry layup in under two minutes to boost the lead to six at halftime.

From there, the Warriors could claw no closer than four and OU caught fire.

For the season, Oglethorpe improves to 18-4, 8-3 in SAA play, while Hendrix drops to 10-12, 4-7 in SAA play. The victory keeps the Petrels in second place by themselves in the league, a game ahead of Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern, who beat previously undefeated-in-league-play Centre on Friday night, keeping the Petrels mathmatically alive for the top spot in the league, two games back of the Colonels with three to play. Rhodes makes its way to Atlanta Sunday afternoon in the final regular-season home game for the Petrels.
