Joey Burris (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) broke out for 30 points and the Lakeland College men's basketball team wore down Macalester (Minn.) College for a 104-82 victory Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Muskies overcame a sluggish start that resulted in a 9-point first half deficit before using a late run to take a halftime lead, setting the stage for a 56-point performance in the second half. Lakeland improved to 3-1 overall and is now 3-0 all-time in the series after beating Macalester for the second straight year.

The Scots (1-2 overall) controlled the game in a number of areas. Macalester outshot the Muskies (48.2% to 45.7%), made 13 three-pointers to Lakeland's eight, and also won the rebounding battle 42-37.

The Muskies came out ahead in two key categories, though. Lakeland took exception care of the ball, committing just six turnovers to the Scots' 22, and also was 32 of 40 from the free throw line, far better than Macalester's 15-for-26 performance from the stripe.

The Muskies also controlled the second half, slowly pulling away from a Macalester team that had just won a 92-89 triple-overtime marathon over Lake Forest (Ill.) College the night before.

The Scots led a good share of the first half, building an early 23-14 lead and shooting 55.6% in the half while draining eight three-pointers. Lakeland finished the half strong, though, scoring the final seven points to take a 48-45 lead into the locker room.

Macalester continued to hang around, but foul trouble mounted in the final 20 minutes. The Muskies slowly pulled away, taking the lead for good early in the second half and pushing the lead to double digits on a short jumper by Stan McKenzie (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) that made it 76-66 with 9:54 to play. The margin would continue to slowly grow as three Macalester players fouled out, and five more finished with at least three fouls.

Burris also heated up in the second half, when he scored 21 of his 30 points. The junior came in averaging 7.3 points over Lakeland's first three games, but made 10 of 14 shots in the game and 8-for-8 from the foul line. He also added team highs of seven assists and five steals.

Three other Muskies scored in double figures. Justin Ward (Sr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, James Oshkeshequoam (Sr.-Keshena, Wis.) totaled 18 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Brandon Hagenow (So.-Sussex, Wis.) chipped in 13 points.

Lakeland made 32 of 70 shots from the field, including 8 of 21 three-point attempts. Burris, Ward and Oshkeshequoam combined for 33 of the team's 40 free throw attempts, combining to make 26.

Dylan Kilgour led four Macalester players in double figures with 20 points. The Scots shot 27 of 56 from the floor and made 13 of 23 three-point attempts.

The Muskies return to action on Saturday to face Concordia University Chicago in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener at 2 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
