Simon Reaches 1,000 Career Points as R-MC Beats Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) led Randolph-Macon with 16 points and became the 40th member of the program's 1,000-point club in a 76-60 victory over Bridgewater in ODAC action Wednesday evening at Nininger Hall.

Simon sank a pair of free throws with 7:50 left in the first half to reach 1,000 career points. He had 10 of his points in the first period. The first-place Yellow Jackets (16-4, 10-1 ODAC) have won 12 straight and 15 of their past 16 contests.

R-MC had four score in double figures. Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) had 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) tallied 13 and junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) chipped in 10.

The teams stayed within four points of each other through the first 13 minutes of the contest. The score was tied at 21-21 with 7:40 remaining in the half before a 7-0 run by the Yellow Jackets gave the visitors their largest lead at 28-21 with 6:10 to go in the period. BC used a 13-6 spurt to knot the score at 34-34 with 2:00 left in the half. A pair of free throws game the Eagles (9-10, 4-7) a 40-39 edge with 41 seconds left. Holmes scored on a follow with nine seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 41-40 advantage at the break. Holmes had 13 points in the half.

A three-pointer by junior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) capped a 13-2 run at the start of the second half to give R-MC a 54-42 advantage with 14:15 remaining. The lead grew to as much as 17 (75-58) before the Yellow Jackets posted the 76-60 victory.

R-MC outrebounded BC 45-33.  Sullivan and sophomore Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) both had seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets return home on Saturday, Feb. 8 for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest against Lynchburg.
