Marietta rallies past Ohio Northern 76-71

MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College scored the final eight points of the game to come from behind and defeat Ohio Northern University 76-71 Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Pioneers, 15-4 overall, stay in second place in the OAC standings with a 10-2 conference record.

Junior Isaiah Roux scored on a driving layup with 1:58 left in the game to give Ohio Northern (10-9, 6-6 OAC) a three-point lead, 71-68. The Polar Bears would not score again.

MC's Garrett Stephenson got an offensive rebound and put-back to make it a one-point game. The Polar Bears missed a pair of shots on their next possession before Marietta took possession as the clock neared one minute. A jumper from RaNeal Ewing put the Pioneers ahead, 72-71.

Following an ONU timeout, the Polar Bears again missed two scoring opportunities and were forced to foul. Ewing hit four free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the Pioneer victory.

Ewing and Stephenson each scored 16 points in the game. Ewing grabbed six rebounds and had three steals, while Stephenson was 8-of-11 from the floor. Keith Richardson, Brennan McKean and Eddy Grenert all finished with nine points. Grenert pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Roux and Dominique Royal led the Polar Bears with 13 points each. Jordan Martin scored 12 points and Lucas Pennington added 11 points. Royal had a team-high eight rebounds, while Roux dished out six assists.

Marietta edged the Polar Bears on the glass, 45-43. Ohio Northern turned the ball over 12 times, while the Pioneers committed 10 turnovers. 

For the game, Marietta shot 39.2% (29-of-74) from the floor, 24.0% (6-of-25) from three-point range and 75.0% (12-of-16) at the line. Ohio Northern was 28-of-66 (42.2%) from the floor, 2-of-14 (14.3%) behind the arc and 13-of-16 (81.3%) at the free throw line.

Marietta travels to Muskingum University Wednesday (Feb. 5) for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
