Strong second half sends Statesmen to 7th straight win

CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team outscored St. Lawrence University 35-27 in the second half on its way to its seventh consecutive victory, toppling the Saints 68-60 in Burkman Gymnasium tonight. The Statesmen got a combined 32 points from senior forward Richie Bonney and junior guard Connor Rehbaum to improve to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the Liberty League.


Despite getting beat on the boards 17-10 in the opening 20 minutes, Hobart committed just two first half turnovers and went into the break deadlocked at 33. Bonney and the Saints' Brady Condlin shared game-high honors with nine points apiece at the intermission.

The game remained tied, 36-all, four minutes into the second half when senior guard Andrew Hoy dialed long distance to jump start a 12-0 Hobart run. He finished the night 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc, accounting for all of his 12 points. Hoy's final triple of the night with 6:16 remaining gave the Statesmen their largest lead of the game, 60-45.

The Saints clawed their way back to within nine, 66-57, with 86 seconds left, but Bonney capped his 15th double-double of the season with an offensive board and a put back. The basket restored Hobart's double digit advantage with under a minute to go.

Bonney logged 16 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Rehbaum also scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Junior guard Trey Blanding added 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists while senior guard Joe Gibbons added nine points.

Led by Hoy and Rehbaum's sharp-shooting, Hobart was 9-of-17 from 3-point land and shot 49 percent overall.

Condlin recorded a game-high 19 points and a team-high six rebounds. Kyle Kobis was the only other Saint to reach double digits, scoring 15 points. SLU (6-10, 2-5) shot 48 percent from the floor, but struggle from beyond the arc, connecting on just 5-of-19.

Hobart will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, when the Statesmen visit Clarkson (9-7, 3-4).
