Giles scores 38 as Nazareth holds off Fisher, 87-84

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Jack Giles erupted for a career-high 38 points and set a school record by connecting on all 13 of his field goal attempts for host Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers held off a late charge by St. John Fisher to take an 87-84 men's basketball victory.

The Golden Flyers won for the fifth straight time to improve to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in Empire 8 games. Fisher dropped to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in conference games. The teams play again Feb. 14 at Fisher.

Giles stole the show for the Golden Flyers as he went 13-for-13 from the field to go where no Nazareth player has gone before. He was 4-for-4 from three-point range and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line in 39 minutes of action.

Three other Nazareth players scored in double figures, including sophomore Mitch Ford with 17 points and seniors Scott Hayford and Brad Ford with 13 and 11 points respectively. Brad Ford also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Giles scored 18 of his points in the first half as Nazareth led 38-33. Nazareth never trailed thereafter as the lead continued to grow in the second half, topping out at 17 points at 59-42 following a basket by Hayford with 13:32 to go.

Fisher rallied, but Nazareth still led by 13, 78-65, following a free throw by Brad Ford with 2:01 to go. A three-pointer by Fisher's Charles McVay on the ensuing possession triggered another rally as the Cardinals closed to within four, 83-79, after three free throws by Adam Ambielli with :30 left.

Nazareth stayed in front thanks to a pair of free throws by Giles, one by Mitch Ford and another by freshman Jack Mulcahy. Fisher's Chaz Lott scored before the final horn sounded to make the final, 87-84.

Nazareth made 26 of 50 shots from the field (52 percent) and 5 of 12 three-pointers (41.7 percent). The Golden Flyers also went 30 for 39 from the free throw line and outrebounded Fisher 36-30.

Lott was the high scorer for Fisher with 16 points. Stefan Bock added 14.

Nazareth is back in action this weekend with road games at Hartwick Friday at 6 p.m. and Stevens Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
