First conference loss for Tommies

Senior forward Zach Riedeman had 20 points but No. 10-ranked Tommie men's basketball dropped its first MIAC game of the season Monday with a 77-69 loss at St. John's.

St. Thomas (12-4 overall, 9-1 MIAC) had a six-game win streak halted and saw its conference lead reduced to one game over second-place St. Olaf (8-2) and two games over third-place Augsburg and Gustavus (each 7-3).

Patrick Butcher scored 20 points and Seth Marx added 16 points and seven boards for the Johnnies (7-8, 5-5), who shot 57 percent from the field , had a 36-26 advantage in rebounding and knocked down 19-of-23 free throws.

St. Thomas had only seven turnovers but shot just 39 percent from the field (24-of-61).

The Toms trailed 37-34 at halftime and fell behind by 12 before pulling within six points with 3:00 to go. They never got closer than five down the stretch.

UST's Marcus Alipate scored seven of his 15 points in the final 30 seconds. Conner Nord closed with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Toms return home Wednesday to face Augsburg.
