Purchase, NY (Jan. 18, 2014) – The undefeated juggernaut that is Purchase College men's basketball kept forging forward Saturday at home.

The No. 17-ranked Panthers sailed past visiting NYU-POLY, 90-74, and could be on the move again in the national rankings come Monday, now that they are 12-0.

The win also improved first-place Purchase to 6-0 in the Skyline Conference standings, dropping the Jays to 2-12 overall and 0-8 in league play.

The second half determined the outcome of the game. Purchase outscored feisty NYU-POLY 51-30 after a tight first half, where the visitors came to play.
The Jays led immediately on a 3-pointer by Brendan Gallagher and pushed the lead to 10-4 on another 3 by Jethro Auguste, the star of the opening period.

But the Panthers returned to form and tied the game shortly later at 15-15 on a Justin Person(JR/Greenburgh, NY) 3-pointer, which was proceeded by a 3 from Andre Nixon (SR/Harlem, NY). AJoel Neri (JR/Port Chester, NY) score handed Purchase its first lead at 12:37 on a hoop in the paint.

With the Panthers ahead 19-17, the back-and-forth contest ensued with both teams firing early and often.

Auguste paced the Jays with 17 first-half points.

NYU-POLY led twice in the first half, but the Panthers managed to claw their way to three leads, including a narrow 43-30 margin at the break. Isaac Neaves chipped in 12 first-half points of his own for the Jays, as both Neaves and Auguste combined for 29 of the team's 40 points before halftime.
Poly capitalized on some sloppy play by the Panthers, converting seven first-half points off turnovers.

However, Purchase regrouped and put away the visitors over the final 20 minutes.

Neri scored the first basket of the second half and the lead quickly ballooned to eight points behind a 3-pointer by Person.

A Ryan Lobban (SR/Bronx, NY) layup at 15:27 provided a 10-point cushion for Purchase. Rookie Franklyn Mickens (FR/Glen Cove, NY) continued his strong play off the bench, hitting a pair of free throws at 12:07 that increased the lead to 13.

Purchase never looked back and never trailed again, shaking off some sluggish first-half play and overcoming the tenacious Jays in the second half, utilizing their bench play and a greater sense of urgency. Transfer Brandon Sillaro (JR/Patchogue, NY) hit a jumper that made it 75-57 with 8:53 remaining.

The Panther lead would grow to as many as 24 points twice in the final stanza, with Purchase's bench outscoring NYU-POLY's bench, 16-4, in the second half. Purchase also tallied 22 points in the paint, while limiting the visitors to six en route to sealing a comfortable second-half win.

For the game, four scorers finished in double figures for Purchase. Neri recorded a double-double (game-high 22 points and game-high 12 rebounds). Nixon, who paced the team with 10 first-half points, finished with 17. Lobban added 10 and Person totaled 12. Person narrowly missed a double-double by one rebound, finishing with nine boards. He also added four assists. Lobban topped that category with five dimes. Sillaro and David Haughton (SR/Greenburgh, NY) each contributed eight points.

In the end, Purchase shot 50 percent for the game, as head coach Jeff Charney tinkered with lineups and got another chance to exhaust his bench in a double-digit victory.

Purchase, nearly midway through the regular season, will now take a mini two-game road trip before returning home, starting with Yeshiva on Tuesday (1/21).
