Flying Dutchmen Beat At Albion, Suffer First MIAA loss

More news about: Hope

The Hope men's basketball team saw its five-game win streak snapped on Wednesday with a 67-49 loss at Albion.

The Flying Dutchmen (8-6 overall) are now tied with Albion, Calvin and Trine for first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings. All four teams are 2-1 in league play.

Sophomore forward Brock Benson of Willowbrook, Ill., (Hinsdale South HS), topped the Flying Dutchmen with 14 points. He was the only Hope player in double figures.

Albion (8-6 overall) never trailed after the 17-minute, 18-second mark of the first half after Lawrence Ridgell buried a 3-pointer for the first of a game-high 18 points and a 5-4 lead. The Flying Dutchmen trailed 35-22 at halftime.

"I think tonight was a matter of Albion playing very focused and doing the things they do well and our team not being very focused and playing with energy," Hope coach Matt Neil said. "Albion's energy was terrific today. Our energy was marginal. They certainly came after us with their best game. We didn't play our best game.

Albion held the Flying Dutchmen to a season-low in points.

"In our league, we have to come with our own enthusiasm and effort," Neil said. "It can't be a one-game thing. It's got to be an every day thing."
