Warriors ride hot shooting to win over UNE

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Michael Rudy knocked down all three of his shots from long distance and finished with a game-high 13 points, helping a well-balanced Lycoming College men's basketball squad to a 75-51 victory over the University of New England in the opening round of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Monday evening (Dec. 30) at Lamade Gym.

The tourney hosts (5-3) advance into Tuesday's final against McDaniel College, while the Nor'easters (1-7) will take part in the consolation match in begin the afternoon (1 p.m.) against Misericordia University. The Green Terror defeated the Cougars in the nightcap, 58-50.

Kevin Anthony and Justin Miller joined Rudy in double figures with 10 points apiece for the Warriors. The three combined to go 13-for-21 from the floor, leading the team to shoot 52 percent (28 of 54) in the contest. Rudy and Miller accounted for seven of Lycoming's nine blocks; Miller had a team-best six rebounds.

The Warriors made 59.3 percent (16 of 27) of their field goal tries in the 2nd half.

For UNE, first-year Brayden Morse tallied 11 points. Sophomore Jesse Dykstra chipped in with seven points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench.

Lycoming started fast, assuming a 6-0 cushion after just three possessions. Then, coming out of a timeout, Big Blue responded with seven points in 64 seconds to grab a 7-6 edge.

It was the only time UNE was on top, as Rudy and Miller totaled 20 of their points in the opening frame to power the Warriors to a 34-21 advantage at halftime.

The margin was no less than 16 points in the closing period, after Patrick Dougher began the stanza with a three-pointer.
