Coyle and Ivy Lead Brockport Past Hamilton

Senior Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots while fellow senior John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) led all scorers with 24 points leading The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team to a 74-62 victory over Hamilton College Monday night in the first round of the Knee Center of Western New York Holiday Tournament at Medaille College.

Brockport (5-1) advances to play host Medaille at 3 pm Tuesday for the tournament championship while Hamilton will face Alfred State in the consolation game at 1 pm.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead at 8-1 in the first three minutes of the contest and had a 10-point lead after a Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) free throw at the 12:26 mark of the first half. Hamilton (5-4) battle back trimming the lead to two points at 15-13 with 10:08 on the clock.

After a Brockport timeout, the Golden Eagles went on  a 10-1 run with Ivy and Coyle each scoring four points in the run and Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) capping the run with a 3-pointer giving Brockport a 26-14 advantage with 7:07 remaining in the half. Brockport took a 31-22 lead into the halftime intermission.

The teams traded baskets for the first several minutes of the second half but with a nine-point lead near the midpoint of the half, Lyerly drove the lane for a layup and Ivy sank a 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles on top by 14 points. Freshman Aaron White (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) added a short jumper in the paint for a 16-point advantage with 9:26 left to play.

A Hamilton basket at 7:20 cut the lead to 14 but Bell hit another 3-pointer to give Brockport its largest lead of the game at 59-42 with 6:42 on the clock.

A 16-4 Hamilton run cut the lead to five points at 63-58 with 3:17 remaining. Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) stopped the run with a 3-pointer and Ivy hit four consecutive free throws to regain the double-digit lead with less than two minutes left. Caruthers added a pair of free throws and then lobbed a pass to Coyle for a dunk and a Brockport 14-point lead with a minute to play.

Ivy's 24 points led all scorers and Coyle hit a season-high 15 points. Caruthers finished with nine points while Bell and White added six points each. Coyle added his 11 rebounds while Ivy grabbed eight. Ivy, Caruthers and Coyle each had three steals for the Golden Eagles.
