WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 7, 2013) – The Drew University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a large first half deficit, in an 82-60 loss to Catholic University (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers even their overall record to 3-3 on the year and fall to 0-1 in Landmark Conference play.

Catholic scored an opponent-high 41 points in the first half, taking a 41-24 lead into the locker room at the break. After the Rangers scored the game's first basket, Catholic scored 23 of the next 29 points and never looked back. The Cardinals Austin Calling and Kyle Phanord combined for 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting over the first 20 minutes of play.

Calling finished the game with a double-double, totaling 18 points and 10 rebounds. Four of the five Catholic starters were in double figures. Corey Stanford helped the Cardinals win the rebounding battle, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Catholic snatched a total of 48 rebounds, including 22 on the offensive end, compared to just 30 by the Rangers.

Sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) was the only Drew player over 10 points as he tallied 14 on the day. Classmates Chris Capelli (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and Kevin-Michael Miller (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) each had nine points to pace the Ranger attack.

The Cardinals capitalized on Drew's ineffectiveness on the boards, scoring 25 second chance points compared to just five by the Rangers. The Cardinals held a slight edge in the turnover battle, with 12 giveaways while forcing the Rangers to turn the ball over 15 times.

Drew narrowed the gap in the second half to 11 on a pair of free throws by Capelli with 13:41 remaining in the game. Catholic erased all notions of a comeback, ripping off a 15-2 run over the next five minutes of play. Catholic held a lead as high as 31 before the Rangers chipped away down the stretch.

Drew will be back at home on Monday night to take on cross-street rival FDU-Florham in Baldwin Gym. Fans are encouraged to participate in a "White Out" by wearing white to the game. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
