BUFFALO – Three State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball student-athletes registered a career-high total in points, but the Hawks fell, 109-99, to Buffalo State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. It marked New Paltz's final game of the 2013 calendar year.

Junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) paced the Hawks with a career-high 26 points, while sophomore guard Keegan Donovan (Groton, N.Y./Groton) and sophomore forward Alex Perlman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) added career-highs with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Perlman's 13 points came in 18 minutes of play coming off the bench. Senior guard Andrew Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Art and Design) was just two points shy of his career-high total, netting 14.

New Paltz crawled back from 11 points down in the first half to draw within one of the Bengals heading into halftime. The Hawks claimed their first lead of the second half (54-53) at 17:37 with a three-pointer by junior guard/forward R.J. Rosa (Marlboro, N.Y./Sullivan West), but Buffalo State went on a 14-0 tear to seize a commanding 13-point edge. New Paltz went on a 5-0 run midway through the second stanza and drew within seven after a pair of Sowah free throws, but the Bengals swelled their lead back to double digits. The deficit wound up being too large for the Hawks to overcome, and they settled for the western New York split after beating SUNY Fredonia on Friday night.

New Paltz falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play, and it returns to action in 2014 when it squares off with Hamilton College on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 4 p.m. in Clinton, N.Y. Buffalo State advances to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, and it competes next from Friday-Saturday, Dec. 20-21, at the Athlete Connections Orlando Holiday Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Buffalo State led for the majority of the first half, and its high-water mark in that period came after a made free throw by junior guard Legree Kirkland gave the Bengals a 27-16 edge. Thanks to a 6-0 run, New Paltz drew within five points, and after chiseling away at the deficit, the Hawks wound up gaining their first lead of the game at 2:35 of the first half when Sowah knocked down a pair of free throws. The teams traded points heading down the stretch in the first period, and a made layup by junior forward Chris Thompson with nine ticks to go in the half provided the halftime margin.

New Paltz led in a number of statistical categories, but it was doomed by 25 turnovers that led to 37 Buffalo State points. The Hawks held a 46-36 edge in rebounds, and both teams shot 50.7 percent from the floor—New Paltz shot 34-of-67, while Buffalo State shot 38-of-75. New Paltz went 85.2 percent (23-of-27) from the line and shot 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from long range.

Sowah's 26 points were buoyed by 14-of-17 shooting at the free-throw line, marking the second-highest total of made free throws in a single game in program history. Matt Devine also made 14 foul shots last season on Jan. 26, 2013, against The College at Brockport, while Robert Dillman (Jan. 8, 1963 vs. Yeshiva University) and Milo Dalbey (March 7, 1959 vs. Drew University) are tied for the program record with 15.

Beyond the Hawks' scoring efforts, Joseph picked up his second career double-double and his first of the season with 12 rebounds. Joseph also filled out the stat sheet with five assists and one block. Sowah added to New Paltz's cause with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

For Buffalo State, senior forward Justin Mitchell scored his 1,000th career point with a 35-point effort, while sophomore guard Bradley Doyley (23 points), Thompson (18 points) and junior guard Roderick Epps (17 points) joined Mitchell in double figures. Mitchell added six rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
