No. 44 Carthage Falls to Hope, 80-58, on Dec. 7

The Carthage College men's basketball team (4-3, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked 44th in the Dec. 3 "D3hoops.com" poll, lost to Hope College (1-5), 80-58, on Saturday, Dec. 7 on the second day of the 10th annual CCIW/MIAA Challenge at Calvin College's Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. 

Carthage knocked off No. 9 Calvin College (5-2), 74-68, on Friday, Dec. 6, while No. 13 Wheaton College (Ill., 5-2) defeated Hope College (1-4), 80-61, in Friday's first game.  On Saturday, Dec. 7, Calvin (5-2-) plays Wheaton (Ill., 5-2) at 3 p.m., EST.  The win over Calvin marked the Red Men's second upset of a top-10 team in nine days after defeating No. 4 Washington University (Mo.), 82-80, on Nov. 27.

Carthage led by as much as six points midway thru the first half, and the Red Men had a 28-25 lead with 5:59 to play in the period.  Hope took over, 31-28, at 3:57 and led by five points at halftime, 36-31.  The Flying Dutchmen upped their lead to nine points early in the second half, 46-37, at 14:29.  A 17-4 Hope run put the game away, as the Flying Dutchmen went up by 22, 63-41, at 8:42.  Hope led by as much as 25 points in the second half, 73-48, at 5:45 and went on to win by 22, 80-58. 

Carthage shot just 36 percent (20-55), including six-of-19 three-pointers, while Hope shot 50 percent (34-68), including six-of-19 from three-point range.  The Red Men got to the free-throw line 17 times and made 12, while the Flying Dutchmen connected on six-of-11 from the line.  Hope out-rebounded Carthage by a 40-35 margin, and the Red Men turned the ball over 10 times to just four turnovers for Hope. 

Reese Herth (Jr., Morton Grove, Ill./Skokie-Niles West) led the Red Men with 15 points on six-of-14 field goals, including three-of-seven three-pointers.  Kevin Sykes Jr. (Sr., Tinley Park, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way North) scored 12 points , and Marlon Senior (Sr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  Alex Eidson led Hope with a game-high 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Carthage plays host to Silver Lake College (3-10) on Monday, Dec. 9 in a 7 p.m. game at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
