Bonney logs 20th double-double in loss to Rochester

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—Senior forward Richie Bonney produced his 20th career double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the University of Rochester handed No. 23 Hobart College its first loss of the season 85-75 in the opening round of the 48th annual Wendy's College Classic. The Statesmen slip to 3-1 while the Yellowjackets improve to 4-3.

Bonney struggled in the first half, shooting just 3-of-10 from the floor on his way to seven points, but went 4-of-5 in the second half. He had a game-high in both rebounds and blocked shots (3). Senior guard Joe Gibbons shared game-high honors with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Limited to just 19 minutes, junior guard Trey Blanding added eight points and five assists.

Rochester put five players in double digits led by Sam Borst-Smith's 22 points. He made all nine of his free throw attempts and handed out a game-high six assists. Nate Vernon scored 15 points. Tyler Sankes and Mack Montague chipped in 13 points each and Kevin Sheehy scored 10.

Nine minutes into the game, first-year guard Pete Drescher sank a 3-pointer to give Hobart a 20-10 lead. Rochester stormed back with an 18-1 to build a 28-21 lead with 5:30 remaining in the half. First-year Thomas Campion, who finished with a season-high seven points, made a pair of free throws in the final minute to make it a 1-point game, but Borst-Smith knocked down a jumper for the sessions final points, giving UR a 39-36 lead.

The stat lines for both teams were similar at the half, except at the free throw line. Rochester was 12-of-13 from the stripe, while Hobart made just 6-of-11.

The Yellowjackets outscored the Statesmen 16-6 in the first five and a half minutes of the second half pushing their advantage into double digits for good.

Rochester against ruled the line, making 17-of-21 in the second half. Hobart had a better second half free throw percentage (.889), but had only nine attempts.

The Statesmen will play in the Wendy's Classic consolation semifinals at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at RIT. They will face Nazareth, which lost on a buzzer-beater to Roberts Wesleyan, 70-68.
