WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team was unable to hold onto an early lead, as it lost to Eastern Connecticut State University, 77-53, in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Geissler Gymnasium.

The Hawks built up their largest cushion of the contest at 15:09 of the first half, as a three-pointer by junior guard/forward R.J. Rosa (Marlboro, N.Y./Sullivan West) gave New Paltz a 12-6 advantage. A potent Eastern Connecticut State offense came alive, however, going on a 28-4 run to open up a 34-16 lead with 3:55 to play in the first half. The Hawks were never able to recover from that scoring spree, as the Warriors, who are receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com Men's Basketball Top-25 Poll, defeated New Paltz for the second time in as many years.

New Paltz falls to 2-4 overall and opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Dec. 6, at SUNY Fredonia at 8 p.m. Eastern Connecticut State rises to 6-1 overall and kicks off Little East Conference competition on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m.

The Warriors began the second half the way they played during the majority of the first, going on an 8-0 spurt. Eastern Connecticut State constructed its largest lead of the night at 8:14 of the second half after sophomore guard Kevin Leumene made it a 30-point game at 66-36. New Paltz was able to cut the deficit down slightly, and Rosa's three-pointer with 1:07 to go in regulation proved to be the game's final basket.

Eastern Connecticut State was buoyed by 51.7 percent (30-of-58) shooting from the field, while New Paltz shot just 36.1 percent (22-of-61). The Warriors held a 39-34 edge in rebounds, while New Paltz committed 18 turnovers to Eastern Connecticut State's 13.

Freshman forward Andrew Seniuk (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) and Rosa tied for the team-high in points with 16 points each. Sophomore forward Alex Perlman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points in 15 minutes coming off the bench. Senior guard Andrew Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Art and Design) keyed the Hawks' effort on the boards with 10 rebounds.

For Eastern Connecticut State, sophomore guard Trachone Preston led the way with a game-high 18 points. Senior guard Mike Garrow and junior forward Brandon Yarborough chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Preston dished out six assists.
