MANCHESTER, IN - The 11th-ranked Calvin men's basketball team rolled to a 78-50 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night to improve to 4-0 on the young season.
After trailing 20-18 early, Calvin put on a 21-8 scoring run to grab a 39-28 halftime advantage.
Calvin then held Manchester to 22 second half points while continuing to shoot at a 50 percent clip to put the game away.
Junior guard Jordan Brink led Calvin with 17 points including four three-pointers. Brink connected on three consecutive triples midway through the second half that allowed the Knights to build a 17-point lead. Brink was part of a solid back-court combo as sophomore guard Jordan Daley had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Inside, Calvin featured the combo of senior Tyler Kruis and junior Tyler Dykstra as Kruis had 11 points and two blocks while Dykstra had 13 points and four boards. Senior Mickey DeVries was also stellar with eight points and eight rebounds.
As a team, Calvin racked up 20 assists while turning the ball over only four times. Sophomore point guard Austin Parks had a team-high five assists.
"I thought we came out focused and ready to play tonight," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "To hold a pretty good scoring team like Manchester to 50 points was a solid effort by our guys. Offensively we did a good job of sharing the ball. Our ball distribution has been good all year so far so that's a good thing."
Calvin held a 37-22 rebounding advantage and finished the game with a 51.7 percent field goal clip. Calvin was also 12-of-25 from three-point range with six different players connecting on at least one three-point field goal.
Manchester hit 11-of-24 three-point field goals but just 3-of-12 in the second half. Blake Brouwer led Manchester in scoring with 14 points while Jarod Schrock had 10.
Calvin will now prepare to host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Friday and Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Friday games will see Hope facing Aquinas at 6 p.m. and Calvin facing Cornerstone at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Hope will meet Cornerstone at 6 p.m. and Calvin will face Aquinas at 8 p.m.
Tickets for each day are $10.00 and will be available at the door each night.
