NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 17, 2013) – With just five seconds left, sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) hit a layup in the lane, propelling the Rangers to a 70-68 victory over Elmira College (0-2) this afternoon in the consolation match of the NYU Tip-off Tournament.

Klinger shined for the Rangers over the final three minutes, scoring the 10 of the last 12 Drew points. With Elmira leading by one with 1:28 remaining, Klinger drilled a 3-pointer to put the Rangers up by two. The Soaring Eagles answered with a three of their own with 55 seconds left. Klinger came back down on the next possession, made a layup, drew the foul and converted the three point play to put the Rangers up 68-66 with 45 seconds to go in the game.

Two clutch free throws by Elmira's David Borelli tied the game up at 68 with just 33 second left. The Rangers were able to hold for the final shot, in which Klinger converted with just five ticks left. A final 3-point attempt by the Soaring Eagles was no good as the Rangers won their first game of the season. Klinger finished with a game-high 27 points. He dished off a team-high four assists and was 10-of-15 from the floor.

Sophomore Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) was the only other Ranger in double figures, scoring 12 points and pulling down five rebounds. Junior Chris Capelli (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan), who made two clutch free throws down the stretch, had a team-high six rebounds and added six points.

The game saw a total of 17 lead changes, including 11 in the second half. Borelli led the Soaring Eagles with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Emira owned a 38-31 rebounding advantage but struggled from the floor in the second half, shooting just 34 percent.

The Rangers home opener will be on Tuesday night against Bard College. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym. All home games this season will be streamed live on drewrangers.com
