Men's Basketball Loses in ECAC Metro Regional Semifinals, Season Ends with 16-14 Record

POMONA, N.J.— The John Jay men's basketball team, the No. 5 seed, was defeated by top seeded Richard Stockton College, 67-53, in the semifinal round of the 2013 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Regional Championship.
 
With the loss, John Jay's season ends with a 16-14 overall record, 9-7 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) record, a third place finish in CUNYAC regular season play, and a second place finish in CUNYAC postseason play. The Bloodhounds' 16-14 overall record marks the first time John Jay has finished over .500 since the 2003-04 season.
 
Richard Stockton College, now 21-7 overall, advances into the championship game on Sunday.
 
In Saturday's game, the Bloodhounds were led in scoring by Kris Owens with a career-high 34 points, to go along with nine rebounds. Jamar Harry added eight points, while Kendall Jordan chipped in with four points, four rebounds and three blocked shots. Oshea Alexander had six rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals.
 
Richard Stockton was led by Josh Blamon with 20 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Bloodhounds scored the first two points of the game to lead 2-0. But that was the only lead John Jay would have as the host Ospreys ran off eight in a row to take a 6-2 lead to start the game.  Richard Stockton led by as much as 13 in the first half, and the Ospreys were up 24-11 with 4:31 to go before halftime. The Ospreys led by 11 at the break as the score was 31-20.
 
Richard Stockton opened the second half with a quick 4-0 spurt to take a 35-20 lead with less than two minutes gone by. The Ospreys maintained a comfortable lead for the first couple of minutes in the second half. But with Richard Stockton leading 37-23, John Jay went on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit in half as the Bloodhounds were down 37-30 with 15:02 remaining.
 
But Richard Stockton answered with an 8-0 run to go up even bigger than before, and the Ospreys were ahead 45-30 with 12:11 remaining.
 
From there, the Ospreys led by double figures to the final buzzer. Richard Stockton's lead was stretched to as much as 21 in the closing stages of the game as the home team went ahead 53-32 with 8:43 to go.
 
John Jay got its deficit to as little as 13 late in the game, but the Osprey lead proved to be large enough en route to the win.
 
Richard Stockton held a 23-13 advantage on points off turnovers and 28-18 on points in the paint.
