Free throws fuel Tommie men's victory

Senior center Tommy Hannon had 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half and the No. 1-ranked Tommies (28-1) used a 28-11 margin in free-throw scoring in holding off No. 22-ranked Wheaton (21-7) Saturday night in NCAA men's basketball playoffs at Schoenecker Arena.

St. Thomas, which never trailed, improved to 16-0 at home this season and ran its season win streak to 12.

The Toms will learn Sunday if they will play host to a third-round game March 16 against No. 12-ranked Calvin (Mich.), a 67-58 winner at No. 14-ranked UW-Stevens Point.

Hannon added 10 rebounds for his 10th career double double. Will DeBerg had 13 points and Zach Riedeman had 11. UST converted 28-of-39 foul shots.

Brayden Teuscher scored 16 points for Wheaton, which had three players foul out. Wheaton outscored the Toms 15-3 from 3-point range but made just 11-of-19 free throws and committed 21 turnovers. The Thunder's leading scorer, Tyler Peters, fouled out with 6:16 left after collecting 10 points and six boards.

The Thunder trailed 37-19 late in the first half and 37-25 at halftime. They used a 12-2 run to pull within 59-53 with 3:10 to go. The Tommies outscored Wheaton 4-0 over the final 1:39.
