Carthage Ends the Year at 12-13 after Defeating North Park, 80-51, on Feb. 19

The Carthage College men's basketball team (12-13, 7-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) ended its 2012-13 season on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with an 80-51 win over CCIW-opponent North Park University (6-19, 1-13 CCIW) at the North Park Gym in Chicago.

Carthage led from the opening tip.  The Red Men jumped out to a 17-point lead, 21-4, at 11:12.  Carthage led by as much as 25 points in the first period, 40-15, at 4:39 and led by 15 points at halftime, 42-27.  The Vikings whittled the lead down to 11 points early in the second half, 42-31, at 18:44, but a 9-0 Red Men spurt made it a 22-point game, 53-31, at 16:10.  Carthage pulled away to a 30-point advantage, 77-47, at 2:17 and went on to win by 29 points, 80-51.

Carthage shot z blistering 60 percent (31-52), including eight-of-21 three-pointers, while North Park shot just 36 percent (21-58), including five-of-17 from three-point range.  The Red Men went to the free-throw line 18 times and made 10, while the Vikings converted four-of-eight.  Carthage had a 38-26 rebounding advantage.  Mitch Thompson (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led Carthage with 17 points on eight-of-13 field goals, along with a game-high nine rebounds.  Marlon Senior (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) scored 15 points on a perfect six-of-six field goals, along with seven rebounds and three steals.  Kevin Sykes Jr. (Jr., Tinley Park, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way North) came off the bench to add 10 points and four boards.  Zach Cassita led the Vikings with a game-high 20 points on eight-of-17 shooting, along with six rebounds.
