UW-La Crosse Defeats Fifth-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 67-62 overtime victory over fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the WIAC while the Pointers fall to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the conference.

It is UW-L's second win in the last 25 meetings with UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles' last win over the Pointers came by the score of 88-76 February 20, 2010 in La Crosse. UW-Stevens Point was also ranked fifth in that game.

UW-L raced out to an 11-5 lead Saturday as Lucas Collom scored nine points. The Pointers took their first lead of the day at 16-15 with 8:56 remaining in the first half after a Alex Richard layup. UW-Stevens Point later led 22-21 with 4:27 left when UW-L went on a 12-3 run to end half and lead 33-25. The Eagles shot 52.0% (13-of-25) from the field in the first half, including 60.0% (six-of-10) from three-point range.

The Eagles never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 10 points, including 45-35 with 13:28 remaining. UW-Stevens Point went on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 46-44 with 7:32 left, but Lucas Morrissey hit a jumper and Jeff Heiden a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 51-44 advantage with 5:31 remaining.

UW-L led 54-47 with 3:38 left after a Trent Schmidt three-pointer, but UW-Stevens Point ended regulation scoring the final seven points to force overtime. Clayton Heuer forced overtime with an offensive rebound and layup with :07 left. Morrissey missed a potential game-winning jump with :01 left.

Collom gave UW-L the lead for good on a three-pointer with 4:00 left in overtime as the Eagles scored the first seven points of the extra session. UW-L led 63-55 with 1:55 left, but UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 63-60 with :22 remaining as Devon Jackson scored five straight points. Braden Tice made a pair of free throws for UW-L with :15 left for a 65-60 lead and after a missed Jackson layup, Tice hit two more free throws with :05 remaining to make it 67-60. Sean McGann finished the scoring for UW-Stevens Point with a layup.

Morrissey led UW-L with 15 points and six rebounds while Collom and Tice each finished with 12. Schmidt scored nine points off the bench. Morrissey also had four blocks and four steals with two assists.

UW-L shot 47.2% from the field, including 52.4% (11-of-21) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 85.7% (six-of-seven) at the free throw line.

Richard led UW-Stevens Point with 18 points while Trevor Hass finished with 16. Richard, Heuer and McGann each had eight rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point, ranked fifth on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, shot 36.8% from the field, including 23.5% (four-of-17) from three-point range. The Pointers shot 80.0% (eight-of-10) at the line.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, February 6 hosting UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
