BUFFALO, NY—Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) netted a game-high 31 points to lead Buffalo State (12-6/7-5) to its third-consecutive SUNYAC win, defeating visiting Oswego (14-5/7-5) tonight at the Sports Arena.
Simmons shot 9 of 12 from the field and was a perfect 10 of 10 at the charity stripe, and added six rebounds and four steals. Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) added 16 points, and Chris Castren (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) matched his career-high with 10 points. Ryan Carney (Olean/Olean) added chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Buffalo State took a 43-31 lead into the locker room after a wild first half. The Bengals raced out to a 12-2 lead, but then found themselves trailing 19-18. Buffalo State quickly reclaimed a double-digit lead before Oswego answered with a quick 8-0 run, but the Bengals responded with the final 10 points of the frame.
The Bengals pushed the lead to as many as 16 with 4:15 remaining in the second half and appear in control, but Oswego gave one final push. The Lakers cut the deficit to five with just over a minute to play, but the Bengals his seven free throws in the final minute and change to preserve the win.
The Bengals shot 47-percent from the field, compared to just 36-percent shooting by the Lakers and held a 29-22 advantage in scoring at the free throw line.
Buffalo State will host Cortland tomorrow at 4 p.m.
