NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – For the first time since Jan. 8, 2011, five players from the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team reached double figures, as the Hawks (7-12, 5-7 SUNYAC) pinned an 83-65 setback on SUNY Potsdam (7-12, 3-9 SUNYAC) Friday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Hawk Center.

Senior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) led the Hawks with 15 points, while senior guard/forward Shereef Taylor (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) and freshman guard Keegan Donovan(Groton, N.Y./Groton) boasted 13 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman forward Kevin Roach (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) each netted 11 points, with Sowah's total coming off the bench. Taylor led New Paltz with six boards, while Taylor and Devine each collected three steals.

For Potsdam, Brandon Williams scored a game-high 16 points coming off the bench, while Curtis Pierce drained 14 and 11 points, respectively. Josh Lambert had the game-high in assists with four.

New Paltz shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field for the game and 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from deep. Potsdam was hurt by 39.4 percent (26-of-66) shooting from the floor and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) shooting from distance. The Hawks held a 41-34 edge in rebounds, and eight of their 41 boards came off team rebounds.

The Hawks benefited from a quick start, as a three-pointer from Sowah made it 23-8 in favor of the home team. Potsdam countered with a 17-2 run, however, and a Colin Peterson three-pointer made it 25-all. New Paltz closed the half on a 12-4 spurt, taking a 37-29 lead into the break.

It was all New Paltz in the second half, as the Hawks constructed a 21-point lead four times midway through the period. The high-water mark for the home team came when senior guard Shalik Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) hit a jumper at 6:48 of the second half to make it a 23-point game, New Paltz's largest lead of the night.

The Hawks look to continue their run toward qualifying for the 2013 SUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament tomorrow, as they take on SUNY Plattsburgh at 4 p.m. at the Hawk Center.
