SAGEHENS CRUISE TO 84-59 WIN OVER OCCIDENTAL

Claremont, Calif. - Junior forward John Weiss (Cleveland, Ohio) had a well-balanced stat line of 16 points (on 7-12 shooting), eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team to an 84-59 win over Occidental on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The win improves Pomona-Pitzer's record to 10-4 on the season and 5-1 in the SCIAC, as well as 9-1 against NCAA Division III teams (the Sagehens are 1-3 against the NAIA). Occidental slips to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the SCIAC.

Sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash.) had a game-high 17 points for Pomona-Pitzer, while sophomore guard Michael Cohen (Tarzana, Calif.) added 14.

The Sagehens were in control for most of the game, but had to fend off an Occidental surge late in the first half. A three-point play from Weiss had Pomona-Pitzer in front 23-8 with 12:18 left in the half, but Occidental used a 10-0 run to get back in it and came all the way back to within 31-28 on a three-pointer from Kris Montoya with 3:17 left in the half.

However, Cohen hit back to back baskets for the Sagehens around an Occidental bucket to make the score 35-30. Senior forward Po Grant (Brookline, Mass.) then hit a three-pointer at the one-minute mark, and McAndrews capped off the half with a lay-up to get the lead to 40-30 at the break.

Cohen then hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Sagehens early in the second half to quickly push the lead up to 53-35 with 15:22 left. Occidental got it back to 53-41 with two three-pointers of its own, but Pomona-Pitzer used a 9-0 run, including five points from Weiss, to push the lead up to 21 and cruise from there.

The Sagehens received plenty of contributions from its roster, as Grant hit three three-pointer to finish with nine points, junior forward Jake Klewer had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and senior guard Harrison Green (New York, N.Y.) had eight points, five assists and no turnovers.

Montoya and Conrad Liebowitz led Occidental with 10 points apiece as the Sagehen defense held the Tigers to just 21-69 shooting from the floor (30.4 percent) and blocked 11 shots.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Whittier for a 7:30 p.m. contest, before returning home to face La Verne next Saturday.
