LEICESTER, Mass. --- Junior guard Steve Rosemond (Everett, Mass.) had 16 points and 7 rebounds to spark Newbury College to a 74-63 victory over host Becker College in NECC men's basketball action Tuesday night at the Leicester Gymnasium. With the win, the Nighthawks of Newbury soar to 5-5 with a 3-0 record in the conference standings while the Hawks of Becker drop to 6-6 overall and 2-1 against NECC opponents. The loss breaks Becker's conference winning streak at 37 games dating back to February of 2010.

Senior center Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) was a force inside for Newbury, scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds and three blocks. Bernard helped the Nighthawks dominate on the boards, 50-37. Senior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) contributed 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. The Nighthawks also enjoyed a heavy advantage in free throw shooting over Becker, making 18 of 25 for 72 percent while the Hawks shot just 10 of 19.

Becker was led by junior guard Tyler Roberson (Irvington, N.J.) with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Darius Sealy (Cambridge, Mass.) came off the bench to score 13 points. Sophomore guard Donovin Ford-Hayes (Windsor Locks, Conn.) contributed nine points to go along with nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Lee Brockett (Waterbury, Conn.) added six points and three blocks. After shooting 51.9 percent from the floor in the first half, the Hawks managed only a paltry 31.3 percent performance in the second.

An aggressive defense and balanced offensive attack helped Newbury to take control early, going up by seven on a 10-2 run capped off by a jumper from junior guard Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.). Becker would answer with back-to-back threes from junior guards Mike Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Roberson to pull within one. The Nighthawks answered in kind with threes from sophomore guard Milciades Carrasco (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior guard Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.), and the visitors continued to hold to the lead. The Hawks finally busted through with an 10-2 run to take the lead, a stretch that included two layups from Sealy. Both teams continued to trade the lead back and forth as they looked to push the ball up the floor, with Roberson's ten points helping the Hawks to a 37-33 halftime lead. Becker shot 51.9 percent from the floor, with Newbury holding a slight edge in turnovers and rebounding to stay in the game.

Both teams continued to trade baskets in the second half, looking for a run to take control. Slowly, Newbury's physical defense ground Becker's lead down. The Nighthawks tied the game for the first time in the period at 52-52 off a three-point play from Young with 12:40 remaining in the game. The visitors went up by 7 with 6:23 left, tied for their largest lead of the game, after a layup from Bernard. On the very next Becker possession and with the shot clock ticking down, Russell hit a huge three to keep the Hawks in it, 61-57. It was not enough for the Hawks, however, as the Nighthawks made their shots down the stretch, going up by eight on a jumper from Watson with 1:26 remaining and Young tacked on a three with 43 seconds left.

Becker will play next on Thursday when they travel to Lesley to take on the Lynx with an 8:00 p.m. tipoff. Newbury travels to Westfield State for a 7:00 p.m. game on Thursday.
