WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England men's basketball team received double-digit scoring performances from first-year Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.), junior Charles Fenner III (Bronx, N.Y.), and junior Joshua Butler (Nantucket, Mass.) while limiting Gordon College to 17 second-half points in a 59-50 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory Tuesday evening (Jan. 8) at the Bennett Center.

The triumph brought an end to a five-game skid at the hands of the Fighting Scots, and was just the third Big Blue win in the last 18 of the series between the teams. UNE improves to 2-9 (1-3 CCC) on the season, while Gordon dips back to 7-5 overall (2-3 CCC).

Thompson finished with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and a 9-of-11 showing at the charity stripe. Fenner III added 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals, as Butler contributed 10 points and 15 caroms -- more than twice as much as any other player in the game. Each assisted on three of UNE's baskets.

Park Thomas had 11 points to lead the home side, and Jason Dempsey had 10 -- all in the opening 20 minutes. Taylor Bajema chipped in with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Nor'easters trailed 42-41 after a hoop by Thomas with 11:02 left to play before locking it down on the defense end. Big Blue allowed just two points to Gordon over a stretch that lasted nearly 10 minutes, while Fenner III and Butler combined for nine of UNE's 12 points during the same span as the visitors established a 53-44 cushion with 1:25 to go.

UNE made all six of its freebies in the final 67 seconds to seal the deal. During the second half, the Nor'easters out-scored their opponents 11-1 at the free throw line to help turn around a four-point (33-29) halftime deficit.

Things were tight early on, until eight unanswered by the Fighting Scots made it 21-12 with 7:08 remaining in the first half. Big Blue had the margin back down to three (29-26) inside the last three minutes of the frame, and settled on the slightly larger gap at the break.

UNE takes to Curry College on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. Gordon will welcome in Roger Williams University the same night (7:30 p.m.).
