BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College placed five players in double figures Friday evening to defeat Maryland Bible College, 84-67, in opening night action at the BC/Don Glick Classic.

The Eagles (6-2 overall) led most of the way but were unable to pull away from Maryland Bible until the closing minutes.

Maryland Bible led by as many as six early in the first half and was up by five, 21-16, before the Eagles took the upper hand with a 9-0 run. Bridgewater junior David Larson single-handedly gave Bridgewater the lead as he worked the lane for all nine Eagles' points during the run. Larson capped the flurry by converting a three-point play to put the Eagles on top 25-21 with 8:48 left in the half.

The Eagles closed the half with a 9-3 run to lead by double figures at the break. A 3-pointer by Ronnie Thomas put BC on top by nine 39-30 and then Maryland Bible's Quinton Harris and Thomas exchanged layups to keep the margin at nine. After a free throw by Maryland Bible guard Jason Reynolds cut the lead to eight, Bridgewater freshman Sammy Tyson knocked down a 15-footer just before the buzzer, giving the Eagles a 43-33 lead at the half.

A layup by Tavis Stapleton put the Eagles on top 55-40 with 15:16 left in the game, but Maryland Bible refused to go away. The visitors outscored Bridgewater 20-7 to pull within two points, 62-60, with 8:37 left in the game.

The Eagles withstood the Maryland Bible comeback and methodically built the lead back to double digits when Kordero Thompson converted a layup, making the score 76-66 with 2:37 left on the clock.

The Eagles displayed a balanced scoring attack with Thomas' 21 points leading five players in double figures. Larson, Stapleton and Thompson each finished with 11 points while Ed Reddick chipped in with 10. Aaron Adams just missed double figures with nine points. Adams also dished out a team-high four assists.

Maryland Bible also placed five players in double figures with Reynolds leading the way with 15 points.
