Kohawks beat Red Men 70-63 in home opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College used an early 12-0 run against Carthage Friday night, as they came away with a 70-63 victory over the Red Men.  The victory was the home opener for the Kohawks and new coach Bryan Martin.

Carthage's Mitch Thompson scored :10 into the game, but the Kohawks answered with a 7-0 run in the next 1:16 to take a 7-2 lead.  Tyler Pierce hit a jumper in the paint with 15:43 to play in the first half, as the Red Men went on an 8-2 run in 2:56, taking a 10-9 lead.  It would be the last lead of the game for Carthage, as Coe put together a 12-0 run in the next 2:49.  Senior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) scored on a fast break with 2:23 to play in the opening half, giving Coe a 31-19 lead, but it would be Coe's last field goal of the half, as Coe held a 32-26 lead at the break.

Senior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) hit a trey :12 into the second half, as Coe opened the final frame on an 8-2 run.  Carthage cut the lead to six with 14:21 to play, thanks to four points from Donte Logan, but Coe had another run in them, as they went on a 6-0 run to put the lead back to 12 with 12:48 to play.  Reese Herth hit a 3-pointer with 11:24 to play, sparking a 9-2 Red Men run in the next 2:56, cutting Coe's lead to 51-46 with 8:28 to play.

Pierce hit a jumper with 4:42 to play, as Coe's lead was cut to two.  The Kohawks responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 67-58 lead with 1:39 to play.  A 3-pointer by Logan with :21 to play cut the lead to five, but Mataloni hit a pair of free throws with :13 to play to seal the victory.

Mataloni led three Kohawks in double figures with 17 points.  Senior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) added 12, while junior Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) scored 10.  Junior Max Stanford (Superior, Colo./Monarch) scored a career-high nine points off the bench.  Herth led four Red Men in double figures with 14 points.

Sophomore Tyler Dawson (Crystal Lake, Ill./South) led the Kohawks with a game-high 10 rebounds, which was also a career-high for Dawson.  Light and Mataloni each added seven boards.  Wirth had a game-high seven assists, while Light blocked three shots.  Joens had two steals.
