Albion Shares Nicely on Opening Night

ALBION, Mich. – Five players scored in double figures as Albion College opened the season with a 78-63 victory over Manchester (Ind.) University on the opening night of the Mike Turner Tip-Off Classic hosted by the Rotary Club of Albion.

Albion shot 47 percent from the field as Lawrence Ridgell produced a game-high 17 points. Anthony Wash contributed 13, and Carter Elliott, Jordan Herron, and Mike Smith all added 10.

"We're moving the ball better than we did last year," Albion Coach Jody May said. "You're able to get a good look at the basket when you make the defense move."

Albion never trailed, ripping off a 12-4 run after the score was tied at 9. Alex Harville knocked down a 3-point basket as the Britons led 21-13 midway through the first half.

The margin reached double digits when Ridgell sank a 3-point basket to make the score 28-18 with five minutes left in the first half. Albion led 39-21 at halftime and it led by as many as 25 in the second half.

Jon Thompson produced 14 points off the bench for Manchester.

The Mike Turner Tip-Off Classic continues at 3 p.m. Saturday as Manchester challenges Wabash (Ind.) College. The Britons return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Wabash.
