WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team lost Saturday evening to Medgar Evers College, 63-43, in the opening round of their annual GU Holiday Tournament.

Gallaudet (2-3) will face Valley Forge Christian College (5-2) in the consolation round tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 27) at noon. The Patriots lost to Muhlenberg College 68-60 in the other men's game on Saturday. Medgar Evers (3-2) and the Mules will square off at 4 p.m. in the championship game.

The Bison led midway through the first half by six, 19-13, but the lead quickly evaporated as the Cougars went on an 18-1 run over the next nine minutes. GU missed nine shots and committed five turnovers during that span. Medgar Evers took a 31-23 lead into halftime.

GU continued to struggle on offense in the second half as the Bison only made 6 of 21 shots (28.6 percent) from the floor. The Bison posted season low numbers in several offensive categories in the loss. The 43 points scored is the lowest total during coach Jeb Barber's five-year tenure at Gallaudet. The last time the Bison were held below 43 points was Jan. 8, 2007, at Juniata as GU lost 77-31. Give Medgar Evers' defense credit as the Cougars outrebounded the Bison 38-31, blocked five shots, made nine steals and scored 26 points off 27 Bison turnovers, a season-high total.
