BEREA, OHIO  – Sophomore forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 23 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern University, 73-65, today (Saturday, February 18, 2012) in the final Ohio Athletic Conference regular season game on Seniors' & Parents' Day, the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game Day" and President Richard W. Durst Day in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. The 2012 OAC Tournament begins on Monday, Feb. 20.

Today's B-W women's and men's doubleheader was televised by SportsTime Ohio. The men's game can be seen this evening (Saturday, Feb. 18) at 9:00 p.m. and again on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 a.m. The women's game can be viewed this evening at 11:00 p.m. and tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 a.m. and again at 4:00 p.m. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.

Prior to today's men's game, B-W honored its lone senior in injured All-OAC point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) who scored 719 career points, grabbed 202 rebounds, passed for 314 assists and made 134 steals. He was injured five games ago and was lost for the season with a torn ACL.

With its win, B-W improves to 16-9 overall and ends the regular season at 11-7.  With its loss, ONU drops to 12-13 overall and ends the OAC regular season at 8-10 and will open OAC tourney play in the first round on Monday against a yet to be determined opponent.

In addition to Payne, sophomore guard Kevion Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 11 points and sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) had 10. ONU was led by senior center Scott Schnelle's game-high 27 points and nine rebounds and sophomore guard Brandon Rushton had 10 markers.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at 18:42 mark when Payne made two foul shots. Schnelle, who had 36 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots at B-W a year ago, tied it at 2-2 at 18:27 with a jumper. B-W regained the lead at 17:37 when Ferrell canned a triple for a 5-2 advantage.

B-W outscored ONU 6-2 to increase its lead to 11-4 at 15:08 when Krakowiak made two foul shots. A 4-0 ONU run brought the score to 11-8, but sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) canned a three for B-W at 12:24 to push the lead back to 14-8. ONU went on a 13-6 run to take the lead at 21-17 when freshman forward Adam Bair connected on a long three-pointer at 7:05.

The Yellow Jackets stung back at 6:45 when Ferrell scored, was fouled and completed the three-point play to make it 21-20. Following an ONU hoop, junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) canned a trey at 5:37 to tie it at 23-23. Schnelle gave the lead back to the Bears at 25-23 at 5:20 with two charity tosses and completed a three-point play at 4:43 for a 28-23 lead. ONU kept its five-point lead at halftime, 36-31.

In the second half, B-W got three foul shots from Krakowiak at 19:46 and Umbel completed a three-point play "the old-fashioned way" at 18:59 and the Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 37-36. After Rushton gave the lead back to ONU with a layup at 18:33, Payne answered for B-W with a triple at 18:12 and a Schnelle jumper at 17:54 for the Bears tied matters at 40-40 and another Schnelle jumper at 17:11 gave ONU a 42-40 lead.

Following a free throw by Rushton, B-W got a jumper from Krakowiak at 15:31 and a three-point play from Payne at 13:47 to lead 47-43. Following a Martin layup for ONU at 13:22, B-W received a foul shot from junior forward Scott Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) and a trey from junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) at 11:02 to build a 51-45 lead. After each team scored six points in alternating possessions, the score was 57-51.

B-W, with the help of a pair of ONU misses on the front end of 1-&-1 fouls and baskets by Krakowiak and Ferrell led to a 6-2 run and a 10-point bulge at 63-53. Rushton ended the run with a jumper at 2:48 to close the lead to 53-55.

ONU made one more run and got as close as 69-65 with 24.9 seconds left when Rushton canned a triple. B-W closed out the game by making its final four free throws.

In terms of the OAC Tournament, the first round is on Monday, Feb. 20, the second round on Tuesday, Feb. 21, the semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 23 and the Championship games on Saturday, Feb. 25. On Monday, the No.5-seed hosts the No.8 seed and the No.6-seed hosts the No.7 -seed. On Tuesday, the No.3-seed hosts the winner of the No.6 vs. No.7-seed game and the No.4-seed hosts the winner of the No.5 vs. No.8-seed game. On Thursday, the No.1 and No.2 seeds host the semifinal games. The Women's OAC Championship Game is at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and the Men's OAC Championship Game is at 7:30 p.m.
