Summers Joins 1,000-Point Club as Spartan Men Upset Rochester, 76-73, on Senior Night

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds on his way to joining the Case Western Reserve University 1,000-point club as the Spartans upset the University of Rochester (N.Y.), 76-73, in University Athletic Association play on Friday at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (10-13, 2-10 UAA) close out the home portion of their schedule this Sunday, February 19 versus Emory University (Ga.) at noon. Rochester falls to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in the UAA.

Summers' sixth double-double of the season gives him 20 for his career. The senior captain now has 1,005 points and 712 rebounds in 94 career games.

In addition to Summers, four other Spartans scored in double-figures with junior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) at 15, junior guard Robert Scott (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) at 13, freshman point guard Jordan Dean (St. Johns, Fla./Creekside) at 11 and sophomore center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) at 10.

Rochester came out of the gate quick and held leads of 4-0 and 9-5 before the Spartans tied the score at 12 with a pair of free throws by Fowler at the 14:30 mark. Case later grabbed its first lead when Summers hit two free throws to make the score 16-14 with 13:20 remaining in the half.

The duration of the period saw several lead changes before Case built a five-point lead of 31-26 when Fowler made a tip-in with 4:18 left before the break. Rochester was able to trim two off of its deficit as Nate Novosel hit layup at the buzzer to bring the score to 39-36.

In the second half, the two sides went back and forth before Rochester moved ahead by five, at 62-57, when Nate Vernon converted two free throws with 7:14 left to play. Case chipped away and regained the advantage when Dean nailed a pull-up three-pointer to make the score 72-70 with 1:18 remaining.

After Rochester cut the deficit to one with a free throw, Dean put the Spartans on top by three, at 74-71, with two clutch free throws with 30 seconds left on the clock. The Yellowjackets had a chance to tie the score when Chris Dende was fouled behind the three-point line, but he could only convert two to bring the score to 74-73. McLaughlin then went to the line and hit two charity shots to seal the deal.  

For the game, John DiBartolomeo led Rochester with a game-high 25 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds.
