Men's Basketball Senior Day Spoiled by Saints in 75-71 Loss

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Missed opportunities in the second half out shadowed its highest shooting performance of the year as the Westminster College men's basketball team lost to Thomas More 75-71 tonight inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. A missed free throw and two turnovers with under a minute and a half in the second half stalled the Titans who shot 52.7% (29-for-55) from the floor.

At the 14:50 mark in the first half, tied 11-11, junior Doug Smith (South Park, PA / South Park) capped off a 9-1 run with a three-pointer to give Westminster a 20-12 advantage. The Saints responded with a 13-4 run to take a 25-24 lead. As both teams kept battling, junior Ron Martino (Youngstown, OH / Cardinal Mooney) scored the last points of the first half with a three-pointer with 1:03 on clock which gave Westminster a 38-37 halftime lead.

Thomas More regained the lead with their first possession in the second half and stayed ahead until 16 minutes later when sophomore Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union) ignited the crowd with a dunk over the Saints' defense, giving the Titans a 68-66 lead.

Thomas led Westminster with 17 points, while shooting 8-for-12 from the floor. Martino followed with 14 points (6-for-11) to go along with a team-high three steals. Also scoring in double digits were junior Adam Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and senior Max Spinner (Boca Raton, FL / Boca Raton) who earned 13 and 11 points, respectively. Smith added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Saints shot 55.8% (29-for-52) and were led by Colt Stafford with 19 points and Phil Feinberg with 18 points, who both shot 8-for-11 from the floor. Ryan Hamm followed with 15 points, including 4-for-4 behind the three-point arc.

The Titans look to regroup as they travel to Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
