CHESTER, Pa. Elizabethtown had to be pretty pleased with its first half in Wednesday night's Commonwealth Conference men's basketball clash at Widener. The Blue Jays were the tempo setters, leading by as many as nine points. The Pride put their forte on display in the final 20 minutes, however, running up and down the court for 45 points in a 78-62 victory.

Steve Ennis and Phil Wenger each scored 12 points to lead E-town (8-11, 4-5 CC), but that was not enough to overcome Widener using the court as a racetrack as it sped around the floor on its way to splitting the season series.

The Pride got 17 of Perry Wright's 19 points in the second half and 11 of 17 from Brian Smith to pull out the victory.

Ennis scored nine points prior to halftime and Lee Eckert six as the Jays hit on nearly half their field goal attempts (13-of-27, 48.1%). It was an Ennis layup off of one of Kyle McConnell's six assists that put the Blue and Gray ahead 28-19 with 6:24 to go. Widener (14-6, 5-4 CC) ended the half on an 11-2 run, getting four points from leading scorer Lamar Jackson (21 points) and three from Jack Brennan to claim the 33-30 lead at half's end.

Wright scored the first nine points out of the locker room, and the Blue Jays' deficit of three to start the half was suddenly at eight, 42-34, with 17:30 to play.

Wenger tried to keep pace with Wright, scoring six straight E-town points to open the half. They would be the only points the Blue Jays could muster over the first 6:32 of the period, however.

Brennan, a senior, reached a career milestone with his 1,000th point in a Widener uniform on a layup with 13:35 left in the game. He finished with 10 points on the evening.

Another jumper by Wenger cut the Pride lead to 54-45 with 11:20 to go, but it was the final time E-town would trail by single digits.

Andrew Mantz was 4-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe for 10 points Wednesday night. Wenger had nine boards, as did Brennan for the Pride. The Jays, great at the free-throw line lately, were just 5-of-15 there, while Widener hit 14-of-20 attempts.

E-town fell to 2-6 away from Thompson Gymnasium this season, but will be back at home Saturday afternoon for Senior Day against Albright looking to split with the Lions. Game time is 4 p.m.
