KINGS POINT, N.Y. (December 3, 2011) – The Rangers roared back to force overtime not once, but twice as they fell in double overtime, 94-87 to Merchant Marine (3-2, 2-1 Landmark) in double overtime this afternoon. Drew (2-4, 0-1 Landmark was led by Asmar Capers (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)  who scored 34 of his game-high 36 points in the second half and both overtime periods.

Terrell Brown (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) put forth one of the best performances of his career with 18 points and 21 rebounds. Brown pulled down seven offensive boards and 14 on the defensive end for the second-best rebounding game in school history. Ray Strelecki recorded 31 rebounds in a game in a win over Gallaudet back in 1956.

The Rangers erased a 10-point, halftime deficit through the course of the second half of play. After trailing for the entire game, Capers nailed a 3-pointer with 3:03 left in the game to tie the game for the third time in the half. Off a steal on the ensuing possession by Dara Mc Keon (Dunboynne, Ireland/St. Peter's College), Brown gave the Rangers their first lead of the contest on a fast-break layup.

Brown added a pair of free throws to give the Rangers a four-point lead with under two minutes to play. Mariner guard Kevin Kerr took a chunk out of the Drew lead by hitting a three with 1:05 on the clock, closing the gap to one. The Rangers missed a three and a pair of free throws on the next possession giving Denver Effland and Merchant Marine the opportunity to take a two-point lead on a three-point play with 37 seconds left in the game.

Capers and the Rangers came right back down and answered with a turnaround jumper in the lane to tie the game with 19 seconds left. Kerr had one last shot for the Mariners hit iron as time expired sending the Rangers to overtime for the second time this season.
 In the first extra frame, the two teams tied the score four times in five minutes. The back and forth action once again came down to the final seconds. Reed Buck of the Mariners tied the game at 77 on a layup with 42 seconds left. A steal by Zach Karczewski forced the Rangers to foul on a breakaway layup. The sophomore made one of two from the line with 20 seconds to go, giving the Rangers a chance to win on the final possession.

Driving baseline, Capers was fouled in the act, drawing two free throws with 13 ticks left. The senior guard made one of two giving tying the game up once again. The drama did not end there, as the Mariners had a layup at the buzzer waved off thanks to Mehmet Onen (Istanbul, Turkey/The Hun School) drew a game-saving charge on the baseline to force another extra period.

The final five minutes of the game was controlled by Merchant Marine who opened up a five-point lead in the first 1:40, the largest since the four minute mark in the second half. Reed Buck had seven of his team-high 19 points in the final five minutes. The Mariners outscored the Rangers 16-9 in the second overtime to hand the Rangers second overtime loss of the young season.

Sophomore Bobby Falconiero (Moorestown, N.J./Bishop Eustace) came off the bench to score 12 points and recorded three steals.

The Rangers will be back in action on Monday when they travel south to take on The College of New Jersey for a non-conference tilt at 7:00 p.m.
