Reading, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2012) - Senior center Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) bettered his three previous games' output on one night scoring a game-high 20 to lead Alvernia University to a 73-66 win over Penn State-Berks Monday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Berks.

Boone capped a 12-0 run with a putback that helped the Crusaders take control by turning a 15-all tie into a 27-15 lead midway through the first half.  The Crusaders were up 14 after back-to-back Boone layups with four minutes to play, but needed some late free throws to seal the win.

Berks cut the gap to just three points, 69-66 with 40 seconds to go, but Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) hit a free throw and Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) followed with a pair while the Lions had an offensive foul and two misses. Stefan Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./G.A.M.P.) closed the scoring with a free throw.

Alvernia got 18 from Thompson and 11 from Davis, and senior forward Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.  The Crusaders were efficient from the floor shooting 46 percent (24-52) and hit 22 free throws in 33 attempts.  Berks had three players reach double figures led by Shawn Green who scored 13.

Alvernia returns to the Commonwealth Conference schedule Wednesday with a doubleheader at Arcadia.
