NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by a season-high 35 points from senior guard Conley Taylor, the Christopher Newport University Captains improved to 15-3 with their eleventh straight victory, blowing past Salisbury (9-8) in an 81-65 final. Taylor added six rebounds and a career-high eight steals to lead the way for CNU, who improves the ir longest win streak since the 2002-03 season (18 games).

In the win, Taylor became the sixth-leading scorer in school history, passing Davon Barton ('09), who wrapped his career with 1,608 points. Taylor now has 1,624 in his career. He trails Buck Moore ('86) by 53 points to join the Top Five.

The Captains raced out to a double-digit lead early, scoring 12 of the first 14 points in just 3:19 of game action. Taylor had six early points in the run and a pair of buckets from Jon Snead gave CNU the early lead. The Sea Gulls, though, would storm back and make the first half a battle.

Led by Devin Posey, the Sea Gulls clawed all the way back to tie the game at 28 with 5:38 remaining in the first half. Posey scored nine points in the comeback. CNU never gave up the lead to Salisbury, though, and held on for a three-point lead at the break, 39-36.

The two teams remained twisted in a back-and-forth game in the opening stretch of the second half, with the Captains opening up an eight point lead less than two minutes in, but the Sea Gulls answering and pulling back within one two at the 14:48 mark.

It was then that the CNU offense ratcheted up and went on a big run. The Captains went on a 20-3 run over the next 6:10 to take a 19-point lead, 70-51. The team went 10-for-11 from the free-throw line in the run and Taylor led the way with 11 of the 20 points. CNU would extend the lead to as many as 22 on a traditional three-point play from freshman Nik Biberaj with 3:05 remaining, giving the Captains an 81-59 lead.

Taylor's season-high 35 points came on 10-of-18 shooting, including a 14-for-16 performance at the charity stripe. His career-high eight steals were half of 16 made by the team in the game. Rookie Mike Cherry had 18 points, knocking down 6-of-9 shots including a pair of three's.

Salisbury was led by Posey with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, adding three assists and four steals. Mike Maczko added ten points and four rebounds up front.

CNU will return to the road for a Wednesday evening conference tilt against Averett University. That game will tip at 6:00 pm. The Captains will also play a neutral site contest this weekend at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University. CNU will face 5th ranked Va. Wesleyan at approximately 6:30 pm as part of the Hampton Roads Coaches vs. Cancer Doubleheader. Tickets are $5, with all proceeds being donated to cancer research; students with a valid ID will be charged just $1.
