No. 8 Emory Pulls Away in Second Half to Beat Spartan Men, 70-59

ATLANTA, Ga. – Junior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team fell 70-59 to No. 8 nationally-ranked Emory University in University Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon at the George W. Woodruff P.E. Center.

The Spartans (8-8, 0-5 UAA) continue a four-game conference road trip next weekend with stops at Brandeis University (Mass.) on Friday, January 27 and New York University on Sunday, Jan. 29. Emory (15-1, 4-1 UAA) wins its third-straight game.

Along with Fowler, senior forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) scored 15, while sophomore center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) just missed his fifth double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

Case jumped out to early leads of 6-0 at 18:08 and 11-3 at 16:51 with Summers scoring nine of his team's first 11 points. Emory came back with a 7-0 run and cut its deficit to one when Austin Claunch scored a fast-break bucket with 15:18 left in the first half. Several minutes later, the Eagles scored six in a row and grabbed their first lead with an Alex Gulotta three-pointer that made the score 18-17 at 9:45. The two sides then went back-and-forth before a 9-0 Emory run took the game to 28-21 in favor of the hosts with 4:14 remaining in the period. Case was able to trim one off of the deficit heading into intermission, 35-29.

In the second half, the Spartans kept it close early and trailed by six when freshman forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) hit a jumper at 13:30 to bring the score to 43-37.  However, Emory pulled away with a 13-4 run that put the Spartans behind by 15 points with 8:33 left to play.

For the game, Emory held a 16-2 advantage in fast-break points and got 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists from Claunch.

Action begins next Friday for the Spartans at 8:00 p.m. at Brandeis.
