Mataloni jumper downs Duhawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Loras College jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 2:25 of the game, but Coe College fought back in the second half for a 69-67 win over the Duhawks.  Junior David Mataloni(Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) scored with :02.7 to play to give Coe the win.

After the Duhawks took an 8-0 lead, juniorNathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) hit a 3-pointer with 17:15 to play in the half, sparking a 13-5 Kohawk run over the next 3:27 to tie the game with 13:48 to play in the opening half.  Loras would twice get the lead back up to five before Coe came back to tie the game at the half, as Mataloni hit a jumper with :05 to play, tying the game at 34.  

A layup from Taylor Baxter with 16:01 to play gave Loras a 45-38 lead.  SeniorJake Raney (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) hit a jumper with 15:51 to play, sparking a 12-0 Kohawk run over the next 3:58, as they took a 50-45 lead.  During the run, seniorKevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) hit a pair of 3-pointers and also had a layup.  As quickly as Coe took the five-point lead, Loras went on a 6-0 run in :57 to take a 51-50 lead with 10:27 to play.

Aaron Schueller scored on a layup with 4:26 to play, as Loras took a 65-62 lead.  From that point on, Coe went on a 7-2 run to end the game, with the Duhawks' only basket coming from Tim Kelly with 2:25 to play.  Sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) hit a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining to tie the game before Mataloni's game-winner with :02.7 to play.

Mataloni and freshman JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) led the Kohawks with 13 points apiece, while Gaster pitched in 11.  Wirth had nine, while Joens finished with eight.  Schueller led the Duhawks with a game-high 14 points.  Gaster finished with a game-high eight rebounds, while Vonderhaar had five.  Mataloni added a game-high four assists, while Wirth finished with three.  Mataloni and Raney each had two steals.

The Kohawks forced 20 turnovers, while turning it over just 10 times themselves.  Coe outscored Loras 17-4 on points off turnovers.

Coe will face Central on Wednesday at Eby Fieldhouse.  In their previous meeting, the Dutch beat Coe 65-44 in Pella on Dec. 7.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
