THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran used two scoring spurts during the closing minutes of the opening half en route to posting a 64-42 win over Caltech in SCIAC men's basketball at Gilbert Arena.

Cal Lutheran (5-9, 1-3) broke the game open with a big scoring spurt midway through the first half. The opening 10 minutes of the game saw each team hold a lead on three occasions with three ties mixed-in. With the scored knotted at 10-10, just past the halfway point of the frame, the Kingsmen took control with a 12-2 scoring run in taking a 23-12 lead with 6:54 left until halftime.

After Caltech (5-10, 0-4) quickly got their deficit back to single digits by scoring five of the game's next seven points, the Kingsmen put together another scoring run.  The home squad ended the opening frame with a 14-3 scoring burst in taking a 39-20 lead into the locker room.

A lay-up by Alex Wilson gave the Kingsmen their largest lead of the game at 41-20 on their opening possession of the second half. However, Caltech methodically dwindled their deficit away. The Beavers got within single digits at 47-38 with 7:22 left in the game via a 16-7 scoring run. Yet Caltech couldn't pull any closer as the home squad all but sealed the game by scoring 12 of the next 14 points.

Aaron Van Klaveren posted his conference leading ninth double-double of the season by recording game highs in points (16) and rebounds (13) in 27 minutes of court. Teammate Collin Knudsen came off the bench to chip in 13 points to round out the double digit producers.

Collin Murphy scored a career high 12 points on the strength of a perfect 5-for-5 shooting effort from the floor. Alex Runkel continued his strong inside play with a team best eight rebounds. It is the seventh time in his 13 game this season the junior posted a team best rebounding effort.

Caltech returns home after their three-game conference road swing on Saturday against the University of Redlands for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
