FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The Hood College men's basketball team (10-6, 2-5 CAC) endured two critical scoring droughts in a 63-51 Capital Athletic Conference loss to the first-place University of Mary Washington Eagles (13-4, 8-0 CAC) Wednesday evening at the Anderson Center.

In a streaky first half that featured multiple runs, the Eagles scored 10 unanswered points after Hood drew first blood with an Adrien Straughn layup to start things off. Hood responded with an 8-0 spurt to knot things up at 10-10 capped by a pair of Reggie Daniels free throws. UMW then countered with a 7-0 run to make it 17-10 at the 11:37 mark. Later, trailing 19-14 with 9:13 to go in the period, Hood was unable to connect on a field goal for about 8:30, but the Eagle lead of nine was by no means unsurmountable. Cameron Cook stepped up and notched Hood's final five points of the stanza to close the gap to 28-21 at halftime.

The Blazers played with renewed vigor in the second half, surging to take a 32-30 lead on a Ramon Smith layup at the 13:20 mark. However, Smith was unable to complete the conventional three-point play after drawing the foul on the his way to the rim. From that point, the Eagles held Hood without a field goal for a span of nearly six minutes and in the meantime chalked up 17 straight points to make it 47-32 with 7:22 to play in regulation.

Hood's last push came in the closing minute when a layup by Cook trimmed the deficit to seven, but it was not enough as the Eagles went on to close out the game at the foul line, hitting 5-of-6 down the stretch.

Cook tallied a game-high 15 points, including three treys, while Smith chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench. Rich finished with nine points and nine boards while Trey Quinn also had nine points and dished four assists.

Ten different players scored for UMW paced by 13 points apiece from Bradley Riester and Walt Smith.

Hood entertains Wesley College Saturday in another CAC contest at 2 p.m. at BB&T Arena.
