Kohawks go downtown to beat Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After trailing 7-0 in the first :59, Coe rallied to beat Mount Mercy 80-69 in its final non-conference game of the year. Coe hit 14 3-pointers in the game, the second most in school history.

The Kohawks tied the game at 14 with 13:51 to play after a 9-4 run in the previous 3:23.  Following a layup by Dominic Zanella, junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) scored five-straight points to ignite a 10-0 run in the next 1:29, as Coe took its first lead of the game on Mataloni's trey to start the run.

Mount Mercy opened the second half with back-to-back layups from Alex Coleman and Chad Underwood, cutting Coe's lead to 38-35 with 18:04 to play.  Sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) hit three free throws followed by a 3-pointer by Mataloni, as Coe put its lead back to nine with 17:23 to play.  An Underwood layup cut Coe's lead to nine with 14:08 to play, but Coe answered with a 10-0 run in the next 2:42 to put the lead into double digits for good.

Mataloni tied a career-high with his 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.  His six treys are tied for the eighth most in school history, while Coe's 14 as a team against the Mustangs were the second most.  Wirth added 15 points, while junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) had 11.  Sophomore Max Stanford (Superior, Colo./Monarch) had a career-high eight points.

Light led the Kohawks with a game-high eight rebounds, while senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) added six.  Wirth finished with five, with Stanford adding a career-four.  Junior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) had a career-high four assists, while Gaster added three.  Light blocked two shots and had a career-high four steals.

The Kohawks return to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night, as they host Simpson.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse.
