Beavers hand Kohawks first home loss

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Buena VIsta countered every Kohawk run in the second half, as they handed the Kohawks their first home loss of the season, 75-61, at Eby Fieldhouse. Coe shot just 37.5 percent, while the Beavers shot 52.7 percent from the floor.

With the game tied at six, Coe went on an 8-2 run in the next 2:38 to take its largest lead of the game at 14-8 with 14:21 to play in the first half.  Buena Vista answered with a 21-6 run in the next 8:38, taking a 29-20 lead with 3:47 to play in the first half.  Junior Garrett Cross (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) hit back-to-back baskets followed by a layup from senior Jake Raney (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) to cut the lead to three, but Buena Vista's Jeff Janssen hit a layup and 3-pointer to put the lead back to eight.

Coe was able to cut the lead to five early in the second half and had it down to seven as late as 7:59 to play when senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) hit a 3-pointer, but the Beavers had too much down the stretch.  Following the trey by Gaster, the Beavers went on a 10-2 run in the next 3:39, taking a 68-53 lead with 3:26 to play.  Junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) hit a jumper and made a free throw with 3:14 to play, cutting the lead to 12, but the Beavers scored seven of the next 10 points to seal the win.

The Kohawks were led by Mataloni's game-high 23 points.  Gaster joined him in double figures with 10 points, while Cross added nine points..  Wes Nordquist and Janssen led the Beavers with 21 points.  Janssen hit six treys, including five in the first half. 

Gaster led the Kohawks with six rebounds, while junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) and sophomore Max Stanford (Superior, Colo./Monarch) added five apiece.  It was a career-high for Stanford.  Junior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier), Gaster and Mataloni had three assists apiece.  Sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) had three steals, while freshman JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) had a career-high two steals.

Buena Vista dominated in the paint, outscoring Coe 32-16.  The Beavers also held a 15-9 advantage on second chance points.  Buena Vista scored 18 points off nine Coe turnovers, while Coe scored 12 points off 11 Beaver turnovers.

The Kohawks return to action on Wednesday night, as they travel to Linn County rival Cornell.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Mount Vernon.
