Staten Island Edges Baruch (70-69), Game Decided Again in Final Minute

The Baruch College Bearcats lost a disappointing one point CUNYAC road contest (70-69) to the College of Staten Island Dolphins on Saturday afternoon in Staten Island, New York.

For the second consecutive CUNYAC game, the score was decided in the final minute of play.

The Dolphins began the game on fire as Bloochy Magliore connected on 4-of-5 three-point attempts to lead by 12 points (37-25) with 4:22 left in the first half.

The visiting Bearcats never lost their composure and ended the half with an impressive 13-4 run behind three consecutive 3-pointers to trail 41-38.

They carried their momentum into the second half and began by scoring the first seven points to lead 45-41. Rob Goldstein scored five of his career-high 11 points in the opening 7-0 run. The lead would later grow to as much as seven points (52-45) on a jumper by Calvin Jurewicz-Johnson with 11:01 left.

The Dolphins slowly battled back and tied the game at 63 on a layup by Lamiek Black. They would later lead by as much as three points (68-65) on a jumper by Magliore with 2:34 remaining.

Chris Beauchamp scored on back-to-back baskets to take back the lead at one point (69-68) with 1:36 left, but T.J. Tibbs, who defeated the Bearcats last year on a last-second jumper in triple overtime, recorded another heroic performance for the Dolphins by nailing a jumper with 20 seconds left for a 70-69 advantage.

The Bearcats had the final possession but were unable to score as the Dolphins remain undefeated in the CUNYAC with a 4-0 record.

Beauchamp led the Bearcats in scoring this afternoon with 16 points. Jurewicz-Johnson scored 13 points (6-9 fg) and Mickey Abbatiello added 12 points. The Bearcats finished shooting 50.9 percent (29-57) and won the rebounding battle, 33-28.

The Dolphins finished shooting 49 percent (25-51), which including a torrid 57.6 percent (15-26) in the first half with 15 baskets off 13 assists. Tibbs led the Dolphins with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Baruch will return to action on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 16, with a 7:00 pm non-conference contest at William Paterson University from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
