Freshmen lead St. Thomas to MIAC road win

Freshman center Conner Nord collected 16 points and seven rebounds and the visiting Tommies used a 22-1 advantage in bench points in Wednesday's 66-59 win over host Carleton in MIAC men's basketball play in Northfield.

The Tommies (9-3 overall, 6-1 MIAC) remain atop the MIAC standings by one game over both Augsburg and Gustavus, both 5-2.

The Knights (6-7, 3-5) lost their fifth in a row, despite 26 points from Tom Sawatzke and 14 points and 16 rebounds from Caleb Rosenow.

Noah Kaiser tied his career high with 14 points. Freshman guard Marcus Alipate sank 3-of-3 from 3-point range and scored 13 points off the bench, and John Nance contributed eight assists, six points and five rebounds. UST had only four turnovers and shot 48.3% from the field.

The Tommies led 36-31 at halftime and used a 13-2 run to build the cushion to 15 points with 9:30 to play. The Knights closed the game on a 7-0 run to cut the UST lead to nine.
