Baldwin-Wallace Men's Basketball Team Falls to Capital, 75-69

COLUMBUS, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored 13 points but the Baldwin-Wallace men's basketball team fell to Capital University, 75-69, today (Saturday, January 7, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Capital Center.

In addition to Krakowiak, B-W, now 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the OAC, sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) and sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) each had 11 markers. For Capital, now 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the OAC, junior forward Spencer Niekamp scored a game-high 20 points. He was followed senior guard Kelly Winter who had 18 points and nine rebounds and junior guard Mitch Westerheide had 10. 

The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 18:47 mark when junior guard Mitch Westerheide scored on a layup. Sophomore forward Ben Danhoff opened the scoring at 19:31 when he made a layup, was fouled and canned the foul shot for a three-point play. B-W ended the run at 18:02 when Payne made two foul shots and then junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made a layup at 17:43 to make it 5-4. Following a Crusader basket, B-W sophomore forward Tyler Farrell (Brunswick) tied it at 7-7 when he canned a three-pointer at 16:19.

Capital regained the lead at 9-7 when senior guard Kelly Winter made a pair of charity tosses at 15:32 and grew to 11-7 when Westerheide made a layup. B-W closed to 11-10 at 14:38 when sophomore center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis DeSales) made a jumper, was fouled and made the foul shot to complete the three-point play.

Capital pushed its lead to 17-10 with a 6-0 run that was capped by a Winter 10-foot jumper in the lane at 12:56. B-W closed to 17-13 when Fairhurst made a three-pointer at 12:31. Another Winter driving layup at 11:14 and a layup by senior guard Tyler Munro at 10:31 gave the Crusaders their largest lead at eight points at 21-13.

Following two Payne free throws at 10:14 for B-W, Capital went on an 11-0 run to build its lead to a high of 17 points at 32-15 when Niekamp made a jumper at 6:52. B-W's Krakowiak made two foul shots at 5:52 to make it 32-17. Payne then made one of two foul shots to make it 32-18 at 5:26. Then Payne made a finger roll at 4:45 following Umbel's third steal of the half to cut it to 32-20. Winter ended the run when he made two foul shots foul shots at 4:29 to push the lead to 34-20.

B-W got within 11 at 34-23 when sophomore guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) canned a long triple at 4:13, but Capital junior guard Tim Congrove countered with a three-point play at 3:55 to make it 37-23.  Three of four foul shots by Farrell cut it back to 11 at 37-26 before Capital freshman center Jared Cashen made two of his own with 44.3 second left to give the Crusaders a 39-26 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, Capital pushed the lead to 15 at 41-26 when Danhoff made a layup, but Umbel and Krakowiak each made jumpers to cut the lead back to 11 at 41-30 at 17:57. A Westerheide foul shot at 17:36 made it 42-30 at 17:36.

After a Crowe  jumper cut the Crusader lead to single digits at 42-33, Winter made a layup at 16:01 to push it back to 11 at 44-33. Then two Krakowiak jumpers and a Selmek jumper but missed foul shot sandwiched a Capital foul shot to cut the lead to six at 45-39 at 14:21.

Following four points by each team, sophomore forward Scott Branchick (Mentor) cut the lead to four points at 49-45 at 11:22 with two foul shots, and then cut it to two at 49-47 with a layup at 10:48 via the fastbreak. Selmek tied it at 49-49 with a hook shot at 9:57, but Niekamp gave the lead back to Capital at 51-49 when he made two of three shots at 9:34.

Following a Westerheide layup, Payne made two foul shots at 8:17 to make it 53-51, but Jackson pushed it back to four with two of his own at 7:42.  Capital junior forward Michael Sommer made two foul shots at 7:08 to make it 57-51, but more importantly caused Payne's fourth foul.

B-W got a basket from Krakowiak at 6:49 to cut itto 57-53, but a Niekamp triple at 5:41 gave the Crusaders some breathing room at 60-53. Umbel drew B-W within six at 60-54 with one of two charity tosses at 4:48. Winter pushed the advantage to eight at 62-54 when he made two foul shots at 4:25.

After Fairhurst made a layup at 4:06, Westerheide countered for Capital with one of two foul shots at 3:52 to lead 63-56, and Munro pushed it back to double-digits with a trey at 1:50 to make it 66-56. Munro added to the lead 24 seconds later with one of two foul shots for a 67-56 lead.

B-W came right back with a Fairhurst triple at 1:13 to make it 67-59 but forced to foul, Winter put Capital back up by 10 at 69-59 with 1:10 left.  A layup and a foul shot by Payne cut the deficit to seven at 69-62 with 38.8 second left. The Crusaders countered with a pair of foul shots by Winter at 36.7 seconds to make it 71-62.

After a Payne foul shot, Krakowiak brought B-W to within five at 71-66 when he scored, was fouled and made a foul shot at 27.8 seconds. Winter missed two foul shots with 24.7 seconds left, but B-W missed a three-pointer and follow shot and had to foul.  Capital's Westerheide canned two foul shots with 11.2 seconds left to make it 73-66 and Fairhurst made a triple for B-W with five seconds left to make it 73-69. Niekamp closed out the scoring with two foul shots with 3.8 seconds remaining.

B-W returns to action on Wednesday, January 11 when it hosts OAC arch-rival the University of Mount Union ion the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.

The games are the January 28 doubleheader versus Wilmington and the February 18 twinbill versus Ohio Northern University.
