Storm fall victim to Grand View comeback - again

More news about: Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - There was a feeling a déjà vu on the Simpson sidelines Saturday afternoon.

For the second year in a row, the team surrendered a double-digit, second-half lead to Grand View. Last year, Simpson held a 20-point lead over its neighbors to the North, only to lose 65-57. This time around, Simpson led by as many as 15.

Jordan Gentry hit a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds left, completing the comeback and giving Grand View a dramatic 74-73 win over Simpson at Cowles Fieldhouse.

Gentry scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the final three minutes, including a game-tying three-pointer with 2:43 left. He ended up with 11 points in the second half and led the Vikings (8-4) to a 35-4 advantage in bench scoring.

The junior came into the game averaging 5.5 points and shooting less than 50 percent from the free throw line.

Olu Rotibi (Chicago, Ill.) scored a season-high 19 points and tied a Simpson single-game record by going a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Cornelius Mosby (Chicago, Ill.) scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Storm (3-6).

Simpson went 23-for-27 from the line as a team while Grand View went only 8-for-15.

The Storm jumped out to a 37-29 lead in the first half and saw their lead peak when Zack Barragan's (Ankeny, Iowa) 3-pointer made the score 58-43 with 13 minutes left in the game.

From that point on the Vikings - ranked No. 20 in NAIA Division II - outscored Simpson 31-15.

Gentry's jumper with 1:38 left gave Grand View a 70-68 lead, its first lead since five minutes in. Chad Boston (Des Moines, Iowa) answered with a game-tying layup on the next possession.

Gentry put the Vikings up 72-70 on the next trip before Kevin Smith fouled Boston, who made 1 of 2 at the line. After a missed free throw by Grand View, Barragan drew a foul and hit both free throws for a 73-72 Simpson lead.

After Gentry's free throws made it 74-73, Elijah Knox (Scottsdale, Ariz.) launched a shot from three-quarter court that went in-and-out as time expired.

Next up for Simpson is a trip to the UW-Eau Calire tournament in Eau Claire, Wis. There, the Storm will face Bethany Lutheran at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29. Friday's opponent and game time is yet to be determined.
