Kohawks fall to Dutch

PELLA, Iowa - Central used a 17-2 run in the first half and held Coe without a field goal in the final 10:42 of an Iowa Conference game at Kuyper Fieldhouse Wednesday night, as the Dutch beat Coe 65-44.

The Kohawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 1:16 of the game before trading baskets with the Dutch for the next 10:28.  Neither team led by more than two during the stretch before the Dutch made a big run.  With the game tied for the fourth time at 17 with 8:07 remaining in the half, Central scored 11-straight points, en route to a 17-2 run 4:51 to take a 34-19 lead with 3:16 left in the first half.

Central led 40-23 at the half, but Coe's defense held them without a field goal the first 7:39 of the second half.  The Dutch scored seven points from the free throw line during that stretch, as they led 47-31 with 12:21 to play when they scored their first field goal of the half.  Junior Nathan Joens (Swisher, Iowa/Xavier) hit a 3-pointer with 12:01 to play, sparking a 10-3 Coe run over the next 2:01, as the lead was cut to nine with ten minutes to play.  During the stretch, junior Garrett Cross (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) hit a jumper with 10:42 to play.  The basket would be the final field goal of the game for the Kohawks.  Central outscored Coe 15-3 in the final 8:54 of the game.

Coe shot 30.4 percent (14-of-46) from the field, but held the Dutch to 18-of-49 (36.7%) shooting.  The Kohawks struggled from 3-point range, connecting on just 21.4 percent (3-of-14), while the Dutch hi 10-of-24 (41.7%) from outside.  Coe was 13-of-23 (56.5%) from the free throw line while Central hit 19-of-23 (82.6%).  The Central bench outscored Coe's 30-6, while the Dutch held a 16-3 advantage on second half points.

Junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) led the Kohawks with 11 points and four rebounds.  Joens added eight points, while sophomore Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) added seven points apiece.  Light added five rebounds and two steals, while Wirth had a game-high four assists.  Senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) had a game-high three steals, while Wirth added two.

The Kohawks return to action on Sunday, as they travel to Carthage.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
